WORLD SQUASH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024
VENUE: Hosted at Hong Kong Football Club, Hong Kong China
DATE: 9-15 December, 2024
The World Squash Federation (WSF) World Team Championships 2024 is set be hosted in Hong Kong for the very first time in the Championship’s 57-year history, in a further boost to the city’s aspirations as a leading sports and major events destination.
In a historic milestone for the sport of squash, December’s event, hosted by Hong Kong Football Club from December 9 -15, also represents the very first time the WSF’s Men’s and Women’s World Team Championships have been held concurrently, in a major step towards gender parity in this high-adrenaline sport.
The Championships have been held biennially since 1967 for the men’s competition and since 1979 for the women’s event. Contested between a team of three players and a reserve, in each round teams face each other in a best-of-three singles matches contest. Landing the rights to the event represents a major coup for Hong Kong Football Club, which has long-coveted ambitions to bring this exciting competitive format to Hong Kong.
A fast-pace and thrilling spectator event, this year’s World Team Championships, endorsed by the WSF and sanctioned by the Squash Association of Hong Kong, China, has attracted some 29 nations, with global representation featuring teams from across Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and PanAmerica. All 26 Men’s and 23 Women’s competing teams will be fighting to unseat the undisputed North African squash powerhouse Egypt, which is currently the holder of both men’s and women’s titles winning the women’s event in December 2022 and the men’s in December 2023.
In an exciting departure for the sport, Hong Kong Football Club now has the honour of hosting these historic championships, bringing the men’s and women’s competition together at the same time, in the same venue, in the same year. Founded in 1886, Hong Kong Football Club is one of the largest sportsASB glass courts clubs in Asia and is no stranger to the sport as a renowned squash destination, hosting the inaugural WSF World Doubles Championships back in 1997 and the 2014 WSF World Master’s Championships as well as numerous Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour and Junior Events.
New to the sport? Well put simply, squash – sometimes called squash rackets – is a racket-and-ball sport, played either by two or four players in a four-wall court and a small rubber ball. Each player takes turns in hitting the ball onto the playable walls of the court, always ensuring the ball hits the front wall. The objective is to hit the ball against the front wall in such a way the opponent fails to return it. This exciting sport is played by over 20 million people in over 185 countries. Indeed, the sport is so popular amongst players and spectators alike, that it is set to be included in the next Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028!
The Hong Kong Football Club’s world-class squash facilities include three ASB glass courts, four traditional courts and space for a spectacular all-glass show court, ensures that players and spectators alike will have an exceptional experience.
This is truly an event you won’t want to miss!
